Request for volunteers
We are looking for volunteers, aged over 18 years old, who wish to take part in a new study looking at the types of effects that result from Ecstasy use. You don't have to have ever taken ecstasy to take part
This project is conducted by researchers from the Centre for Public Health, Liverpool John Moores University, the Departments of Psychology at the Universities of Liverpool and Bath (UK), and MAPS (USA).
The study takes the form of a confidential, easy to complete online questionnaire that asks general questions about drug and alcohol use, and more specifically about ecstasy. It will take a maximum of 10 minutes to fill out and is completed entirely online.
It is anticipated that the information obtained from this important project will allow us to gain a greater understanding of drug using behaviors, and allow us to accurately inform health campaigns concerned with these issues.
For more information to help you decide whether to take part, and the questionnaire itself, please go to http://www.survey.ljmu.ac.uk/ecstasy.
Remember, this is a confidential study and great care will be taken to ensure your anonymity. To find out more please contact Dr Harry Sumnall - h.sumnall (at) ljmu.ac.uk
- University of Pennsylvania Survey of Spritual Experiences
Principal Investigator: Andrew Newberg, MD
Co-Investigators: Avrum Goodblatt, BA, Nancy Wintering, MSW
The purpose of this online survey is to obtain information about spiritual experiences and how they relate to various belief systems. We are asking you to provide information regarding spiritual experiences that you may have had, religious feelings you may have, and how they relate to each other. You will also be asked questions about your existential experiences and beliefs. We anticipate that completing this web site will take approximately 30 minutes. Psychedelics ("hallucinogens") are asked about near the end of the survey -- Here's an opportunity to input information about the entheogenic effects of psychedelics into a more general survey of spiritual experiences!

MDMA-Assisted Psychotherapy for Subjects with Treatment-Resistant Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Michael Mithoefer, M.D., Charleston, South Carolina
View the online ad for this study here
This FDA-approved MAPS-sponsored study is seeking individuals with treatment-resistant posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Fourteen subjects have already completed this placebo-controlled, double-blind experimental treatment, with no adverse affects. There will be three MDMA-assisted (or placebo) psychotherapy sessions in midst of a seven-week therapy program that includes conventional psychotherapy. Subjects who receive placebo will have the option to do MDMA-assisted therapy in the "open-label" portion of the protocol. Contact mmit@bellsouth.net if you think you may qualify for the study and would like to participate or learn more.
- MDMA (Ecstasy), Cannabis and Mood
Researcher: Alex Harvey, HS961286@student.staffs.ac.uk
Click here to take a survey that examines your drug use and assesses your mood and recent life experiences. This project is part of the final assessment for the Graduate Diploma in Psychology at Staffordshire University.
If you agree to participate you will then answer a series of questions and your responses will be recorded by the website. You will firstly provide some biographical details (age and sex). The next series of questions relate to your drug use and answer some questions on your mental health. You are not asked to give your name and any information that could be used to identify you and the data you provide will be destroyed by the researcher after the project is completed. Neither your IP address nor your email address are collected as part of the data. Only the researcher and supervisor will have access to the data you provide. No attempts will be made to identify participants from the information which they submit. The data will be treated as confidential and private until it is destroyed. There is no further participation required after the first survey you complete.
You must be 18 years old or older to complete the survey. Any data from those under 18 will be excluded.
- Personality Characteristics of Frequent Ayahuasca Drinkers in North America
This dissertation level research study is being conducted By Kirby Surprise, a doctoral student at the California Institute for Intergral Studies. The study involves finding differences in personality characteristics between frequent drinkers of ayahuasca, the general population, and other frequent users of psychedelics. 30 frequent drinkers of ayahuasca will be obtained from the North American population. These volunteers will be administered the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ), and a general demographics survey. This will be done through the mail, and is expected to take a participant about three and a half hours to complete. Personality data derived from these instruments will be compared to the normal populations upon which the instruments are based, and to previous personality profiles in studies of hallucinogen and drug users. If sufficient members of the UDV church are found inclusion preference will be given. Personal security for participants will be ensured by destroying contact information before surveys are mailed, and not requesting identifying information within the study. Interested people may contact or send their address information to: Kirby Sunprise.
- Share your Thoughts on Ecstasy Misuse Campaigns
Have you seen posters, ads in the newspaper, or on TV directed at people who use ecstasy? What do you think of them? People who are using ecstasy or who have used it in the past can complete a survey on their attitudes on ecstasy misuse campaigns. The survey can be found on the internet, at http://www.xtc-survey.net, and there are two versions, one in English and one in German. The survey takes 10 to 12 minutes, and all responses are completely anonymous.
- Psilocybin in the Treatment of Anxiety Associated with Stage IV Cancer
If you have anxiety associated with Stage IV Cancer (which has not spread to your brain or central nervous system), we are looking for patients to be in a new study taking place at The Research and Education Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, CA.
The significance of this study is that it is addressing the important issues of psychological and spiritual well being of people who have advanced cancer. In 2001, the National Cancer Policy Board of the Institute of Medicine and National Research Council issued a report (Improving Palliative Care for Cancer: Summary and Recommendations) that specifically recommended research be conducted using novel agents and methods. Psilocybin is a novel agent which produces a profound alteration in your state of consciousness. It is the main active ingredient found in "magic mushrooms".
Our specific aim is to learn whether this psychoactive drug, psilocybin, might be effective in reducing anxiety, depression and physical pain, and therefore improving your quality of life. This pilot study will start with 12 people ages 18-65. For each participant there will be two overnight admissions to the hospital. In one session you will be given a placebo and in the other you will get the active medication, but no one will know which drug is administered when. This is called a double blind study. You will be asked to fill out questionnaires about how you feel, your pain levels and your moods. There will also be at least two psychotherapy meetings before the study sessions, so that you are fully aware of what to expect and to have all your questions answered.
We cannot take you in the study if you have central nervous system (CNS) cancers, kidney disease, diabetes, abnormal liver function tests, epilepsy, cardiovascular disease including high blood pressure (BP greater than 140/90), and pregnancy. The psychiatric exclusions are: you or an immediate family member with a history of a major psychiatric disorder, a current substance abuse problem, or an anxiety or a mood disorder within 1 year prior to the onset of symptoms of your current illness.
We also cannot take you in the study if you are taking certain medications, such as: anti-seizure, insulin and oral hypoglycemics, blood pressure and cardiovascular drugs. Some antidepressant (SSRIs) medications cannot be taken within the two weeks prior to the session. (Except for Prozac, which cannot be taken in the last 5 weeks prior to the session.)
You will get a MRI of the brain prior to admission (if you haven't had one in the prior two months), at the study's expense, to be sure there is no CNS involvement. You can provide us, or the study will pay for, lab work from the prior 2 weeks (CBC, liver function and renal function). The history and physical, neurological exam, EKG, and a urine pregnancy test (if you are a woman with child-bearing potential), will be done on admission by the house staff doctors.
You will be allowed to take your own medications while in the hospital, and will be encouraged to bring to the hospital personal photos, small memorabilia, and some of your favorite music that can be played during the sessions.

- Antidepressants for depressed ecstasy users
I am a researcher from the University of Sussex investigating the effectiveness and possible side effects of different types of antidepressants prescribed to 'Ecstasy' users, working under the supervision of Dr Michael Morgan.
If you are a health professional that has prescribed antidepressants to current or former "Ecstasy" users, or know any health professionals (GP's, Psychiatrists etc) who have, could you contact me at my email address (see below).
Alternatively, if you are a current or former "Ecstasy" user who has been prescribed antidepressants, or know other individuals fitting this description who would be prepared to relate their experience to me in confidence, please get in touch.
Any input would be tremendously appreciated. I hope that the results of this survey will provide useful data about the relative effectiveness of different classes of antidepressants for depressed 'Ecstasy' users, and will ultimately lead to improved treatment.
Thanks for your help

- Psychoactive Biotechnology: local knowledge in a global context.
This is a research project based at the University of Hawaii that has been
commissioned to survey and document innovations resulting from the use of
psychoactive plants. We are particularly interested in the intentions,
experiences, and life-changing experiences involving politics, philosophy,
healing, spirituality, environmental awareness, and altered images of the
future.
Our research team consists of an ethnobotanist, a philosopher, and a
political scientist. We are now beginning surveys, interviews, and group
discussions in Hawaii; but our website invites the global community
affiliated with psychoactive plants to contribute their knowledge through a
