MAPS Rites of Passage Project:
Ayahuasca Helps Teen Overcome Drug Abuse

In this short account, a woman tells the story of her daughter overcoming drug abuse through her participation in an ayahuasca ceremony. Although the name of the girl has been changed, the story is true.

Kristen had gone from smoking pot to trying every recreational and pharmaceutical drug she could lay her hands on over the course of three and a half years of her young life from 13-17 years old. During the course of these three years she had been to rehab, wilderness programs, therapy, special schools, was medicated to control her moods, even foster care as the authorities had to take her from me when I couldn't make her go to school and she would be found on the street during school hours when I worked, altered under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.  Her life and health were a disaster, she kept relapsing, didn't seem to care about anything other than the next high. She was desparately unhappy, beligerent, depressed in big awful cycles, always "bored."

When I told her that she could try the medicine which would show her that what she was looking for in seeking altered states could be found by taking a powerful psychotropic hallucinogenic medicine which would leave her other dabblings in the dust so to speak, she jumped at the opportunity.  The very first time she participated in the medicine ceremony she was able to see what she had been doing to herself and how she was denying her spirit life, filling herself with low bottom spirits contained in the recreational drugs and alcohol.  She wept and said, "Mama how could I have done this to myself when 1000 angels live in my heart."  She was brave, she faced purging all the garbage out of her system like a champ and never looked back again.  That was in 2007.  She just was awarded a scholarship for young entrepreneurs to open her own yoga studio in N. Kansas City Missouri at the age of 21!  She has a 4.0 GPA and is a yoga instructor who loves to serve the higher good of mankind today.

The name of the organisation is bluemorphotours.com and you can check out their website, read about what we do there, find the bio for Hamilton Souther who is the brilliant young man who guides people through their journeys while there. Hamilton administered medicine to my daughter on five occasions over a nine day period there, it is called a "tour" (not sure why).

I can't tell you how grateful I am for the work Hamilton Souther did with her in the medicine space and how she turned her life around because of finding out who she really was but purging all she really wasn't using ayahuasca medicine at the hand of Hamilton Souther - and of course me too.  I have referred several other young people to our group there and to some other shamans who are in the US but Hamilton is by far the most thorough, most accessible to the young.  I highly recommend this experience to any young person on the brink of dissing their own life and destiny for no good reason.  There is so much reason to expect the best.
