This paper attempts to cover a wide array of topics relating to MDMA / ecstasy, including its pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, subjective effects, side effects, adverse effects and potential long-term affects of MDMA. The review also contains similar information concerning GHB. It appears that the review is primarily directed toward a medical audience, with the authors providing recommendations for treatment of severe adverse events after drug use. While the paper is mostly well-written, the organization is awkward, and information on related topics (in vitro pharmacology studies versus human studies using pharmacological pretreatments) are not adjacently placed. The author is most adept at reporting on and describing pharmacology and emergency medical procedures, whereas he is least knowledgeable about some of the research concerning the subjective effects of MDMA, and studies comparing of ecstasy users with non-user controls on tests of cognitive function. Sometimes the author arrives at conclusions that seem to be at variance with information provided earlier in the review, as when he discusses the potential risks of pretreatment or coadministration of SSRIs with MDMA/ecstasy. Overall, the review is fairly extensive, but poorly organized. It may prove most useful for those seeking information on MDMA pharmacology. No full text version available at this time. |
