Deborah Mash, PhD. Deborah Mash was invited to this conference to give a presentation on ibogaine because Israeli researchers are developing a study investigating the use of ibogaine-assisted therapy in the treatment of addiction. Mash gave a brief history of the use of ibogaine as a therapeutic drug, and described her clinical work with ibogaine safety studies (Miami, FL) and the ibogaine clinic in St. Kitts (Virgin Islands) that she directs.
In 1995-96, a MAPS grant of $25,000 allowed the Miami research team to obtain important preliminary data to support their grant application to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The grant entitled "Ibogaine: Human Phase 1 Clinical Trial" did not receive NIH funding. No other funds were available to continue this important work in the absence of public support from the NIH. Hope remains that Phase 1 (safety and dose finding) studies will resume with ibogaine. Meanwhile, research is being conducted with addicts seeking treatment in the St. Kitts clinic, Healing Visions. St. Kitts does not adhere to the Single Convention, which forbids the use of ibogaine (and other Schedule 1 drugs) in most countries.
