PAJ : v01n1 : Peyote Meeting : A Blessed Event

On May 11, 1996, a small, but diverse group of people gathered to officially introduce the Peyote Foundation and to welcome the new h'iends who have come together to facilitate this project. Over twenty individuals shared the fire with us. They represented people of various cultural backgrounds and professions. Among us were an attorney, artist, horticulturist, butcher, journalist, pharmacist, musician, mechanic, psychotherapist, herbalist, and a corporate public relations representative.

Earth friendly designer Noel Hebets shared an important solar architecture model. Derek Westlund, our Chief Curator, explained the benefits of peyote grafting and gave a demonstration to the group.

After giving thanks to the forces that brought us together and remembering those who could not be with us, we burned sage, lit the fire and shared the sacramental tea. Some participants took turns playing the water drum while others listened and relaxed around the fire. Old friends and neighbors got to know new ones as we exchanged many heartwarming stories and experiences.

At about 3:00 AM, a brilliant streak of light beamed across the western horizon. This highly unusual blaze of glory was the most spectacular celestial event any of us had ever seen. From our point of view, the streak was directly over the newly constructed sacramental shadehouse, surely blessing our intentions. When finally the stars faded into dawn we gave thanks for a glorious and unforgettable night. As the sun broke over the horizon we roasted corn and potatoes in the fire and ate them with joy and thanks, ready to face the day full of new life.

The officers of the Peyote Foundation wish to thank everyone who made the first ceremonial gathering of the Peyote Foundation possible. Each person in attendance brought an important piece of themselves, without which the weekend would not have been as pleasant or meaningful.

Special thanks go out to Jo and Carter Norris, whose $1000 donation made them the first founding members of the Peyote Foundation. Also to Noel, and the Hebets family, thank you for bringing more than your share of love, supplies, and pure physical energy to everything and everybody.
