Daniel Pinchbeckâs Breaking Open the Head (Broadway Books) is an "exhilarating and illuminating", (Publisherâs Weekly) work of personal travelogue and cultural criticism that ranges from the primitive to the postmodern in a quest for the meaning of the psychedelic experience. Pinchbeck undergoes a tribal initiation ritual in West Africa, takes ayahuasca with Indian shamans in the Ecuadorian Amazon, and visits the visionary utopia of the Burning Man festival. While psychedelics are demonized today, the visionary compounds found in plants are the spiritual sacraments of tribal cultures around the world. Breaking Open the Head is a passionate, multilayered, and sometimes rash personal inquiry into this deep division.
A founding editor of Open City magazine & press, Daniel Pinchbeck writes for Wired, RollingStone, The New York Times Magazine, and Details.
