MAPS: Near Death Experiences

Hello to everyone!
First off, I would like to quickly introduce myself. I am a junior at the
University at Buffalo studying Psychology and Computer Science. I have
been a MAPS member for several months now and have been on the list for the
same amount of time. I would like to thank everyone for the discussions
from which I have learned a great deal.
Now for my question...
I have read Karl Jansen's book "Ketamine: Dreams and Realities." In my
biopsychology class we have been talking about damage in the brain due to
massive releases of glutamate stemming from heart attacks, strokes, etc.
Jansen states that ketamine can be used to prevent damage via the blockade
of N-P receptors. Jansen later states that the body has some protective
chemicals of its own such as NAAG and magnesium. The natural defense
mechanism is proposed as a mechanism which can cause an individual to have
a near death experience. Does anyone know if there is any published
literature concerning NDEs after the administration of other drugs used to
prevent brain damage after a stroke, heart attack, etc.?
Thanks for any input.
With kind regards,
Niels Bergsland
