RE: MAPS: Flatliners and Media Hysteria

Hi Dan

The substance in question ... flatliners ... is 4-MTA. It originally
came out of some of David Nichols research, but he considers it
rather useless as a recreational substance. It is believed to have
come into prominence because Holland has been clamping down on
some of the precursors to MDMA. Just another example of how
the war on drugs can lead to more problems.

The media articles (and you can find a few more including some
detailed articles from Aussie papers, at www.mapinc.org) are quite
sensationalist (and who knows where the 33 times figure came from -
presumably some calculation based on its serotonin reuptake
inhibition), but are right on some accounts. It is certainly
a substance to avoid.

I recall seeing a link to a UK Customs site which had some fairly
accurate info, it was posted to the ADCA update list just prior to
the media frenzy - it probably has some more accurate info.
