Re: MAPS: Dream induction and Lucid dreaming via psychedelics
I was looking into Calea zacatacachichi a while back and found that it does
have proven to induce lucid dreaming. Here's what I found from various
sources:
While the Mexican herb Calea zacatacachichi has been traditionally known and
employed as a dream inducer, traditionally a cup of tea was made as a
cigarette of Calea would be smoked, then one would lie down to sleep and
this often produces lucid dreaming. Chontal natives use to navigate the
realms of dreaming sleep. By drinking an infusion made from the leaves of
this plant, they claim to experience intense moments of lucid dreaming
during which they access a vast hidden realm of insight, imagery and
knowledge normally unavailable during normal waking consciousness.
Controlled clinical studies have been conducted that verify this unusual
dream-enhancing or "oneirongenic" effect. The result is tasteful smoke
which brings relaxation and fluidity to mind and body, ushering in an easy
and deep sleep during which the dreamer will find the gates to the
dreamscape gently opened. A mix of Calea zacatechichi, Mimosa pudica, Poppy
Flowers & other rare plants and botanical essences are supposed to reported
to blend well to produce a wonderfully fluid dream state.
Objective research revealed that the plant extract indeed produces a state
of drowsiness, followed by peculiarly intense but short episodes of cat-naps
in which a set of dream sequences invariably were reported by the subjects,
who stated them to be unusually lucid and of profound meaning. In a careful
clinical study, control groups receiving placebos, barbiturates,
tranquilizers or alcohol had (naturally) no such experiences

increases REM as long as you on't take too much (as this prevents sleep).

and published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology (don't have the reference

by some users that it is effective to induce many short REM cycles
("catnaps") with vivid lucid quality. Unfortunately at this time I cannot
corroborate with my own experience. Definitely worth pursuing, however.
Traditionally a tea is taken and a cigarette of the herb smoked just before
bed.
