Many times we read about psychedelics
"enhancing" the senses of their users. This has two possible
meanings: The first, unproblematical meaning is that users of the drugs
find their surroundings somehow different/better/whatever and therefore their
*experiences* are enhanced. The second meaning, however, is less
unequivocally true. It is claimed by some that psychedelics actually
increase the objective acuity of the senses, for instance the ayahuasqueros'
stories of the jaguars eating Yaje to sharpen their vision/smell for
hunting.
So, my question is this: Is there any
objective data to back this up? If so, what's the proposed
mechanism?
Thanks...
