MAPS: N2O and brain cells

People keep talking about how bad N2O (nitrous oxide, laughing gas)
is, that it kills brain cells et c. A doctor fiend of mine claims
that the nitrogen somehow binds the oxygen in your blood stream thus
preventing it from reaching your brain. My questions are as follow:

1) Is this true?

2) If so does this lead to brain damage?

3) If so, how extensive is this brain damage (i e how many brain
cells die from a good snort of N2O compared to say, a punch to the
head)?

4) Does the euphoric and sometimes psychedelic effects of N2O stem
exclusively from lack of oxygen?

5) Is there any safe and harmless way of experiencing the euphoric
qualities of N2O?
