Re: MAPS: THC and copper
The screens gradually disappear unless they are clogged (with tars) to the
point of uselessness.
Presumably the metal in the screens is gradually evaporating in the flame
(either as an element or in combination with something in the flame or
smoke); otherwise the screens would last "forever".
Consequently, some people put a screen or several stones deep inside the
bowl and then lightly smoke the pipe to build a thick layer of fine,
white-gray ash. This filters the (larger particles from) the smoke;
presumably they are revaporized later. Vaporization of the screen is
minimal and almost no grit blows through the screen or between the stone.
Ash, not resin and tar, is the better insulator and filter it seems.
Although, really, anyone who smokes without using a water-pipe is "asking
for it."
1. The active principles in pot smoke are _not_ water soluble.
2. Running the smoke through three separate water chambers will show that
the first one "soils" (turns turbid and stinks, and becomes alkaline) very
quickly, the second "soils" more slowly but at moderate pace, and the third
stays (relatively) sweet a long time.
3. The cytotoxic principles in pot retain this toxic quality for 3-4
seconds.
So: intelligent smokers (if that's not oxymoronic) will use a water pipe
that retains the smoke for 3-4 seconds _and_ that washes it at least twice.
For example: a two-well bong with a very long breathing tube should work
well. The process for smoking this would probably be: light and inhale
until the smoke column almost fills the breathing tube; stop and exhale;
then inhale the smoke.
People who are using pot for medical reasons should be especially careful
with regards to unfiltered pipe smoke. A bare screen, or a resin-coated one
with enough perforation remaining to pass smoke, will also pass a lot of
charred fiber into your lungs. (As if you didn't have enough problems
already!)
