Observational Study of the Long-Term Efficacy of Ibogaine-Assisted Therapy: New Zealand

Observational study of the long-term efficacy of ibogaine-assisted therapy in participants with opioid addiction

This study took place at an independent ibogaine clinic in New Zealand. Its purpose was to examine the safety and long-term effectiveness of ibogaine treatment for opioid addiction severity and quality of life in 14 individuals receiving legal ibogaine treatment. Results showed a significant reduction addiction severity (p=0.002) as well as depression (p < 0.001) and opioid withdrawal symptoms (p=0.015). Overall, a single ibogaine treatment reduced opioid withdrawal symptoms and achieved opioid cessation or reduced use in across the one year study. Ibogaine’s legal availability in New Zealand may offer improved outcomes where legislation supports treatment providers to work closely with other health professionals.
