Why We Need Your Support

The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) is raising $50,000 to support medical marijuana research. Of that amount, $10,000 is needed for our FDA-approved and Colorado State funded marijuana PTSD study in 76 veterans, and $40,000 is needed for our advocacy efforts to end federal obstruction of privately-funded marijuana drug development research.

Research Costs: In December 2014, MAPS received a $2.15 million grant from the State of Colorado for a Phase 2 study of the safety and efficacy of smoked marijuana in 76 veterans with chronic, treatment-resistant posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The grant covers the costs of conducting the study, but doesn’t include about $10,000 for getting the protocol approved by the required regulatory authorities including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Public Health Service (PHS), Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Advocacy Costs: As part of our larger efforts to develop whole-plant marijuana into a prescription medication, MAPS is working to end the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) monopoly on the production of marijuana for all FDA-regulated clinical research, and to end the PHS review of medical marijuana protocols. These efforts include our lawsuits against the DEA regarding the application of Professor Lyle Craker, University of Massachusetts-Amherst, to grow marijuana for MAPS-sponsored research. If our newest DEA application is approved, it will open the door to Prof. Craker and other growers interested in producing medical grade marijuana for FDA-regulated clinical research, and ultimately providing marijuana for prescription use.

We are working with members of Congress to end the PHS protocol review. While our most recent marijuana study got past this hurdle, the PHS protocol review process delayed it for three years, and has prevented three previous MAPS studies from completing over the last 25 years. In 2014, we generated a letter from 30 Representatives to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Burwell asking her to end the PHS protocol review, but she refused to take action. On March 10, U.S. Senators Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Rand Paul introduced the CARERS Act to legalize marijuana for medical use and to facilitate medical marijuana research, for which we are working to generate support. About $40,000 is needed for attorney fees and staff time.
