The Psychedelic Pioneers on History Channel

    by Greg Williams
The History Channel explores LSD and psychedelics in a January 20th documentary

Ten years before Timothy Leary advised everyone to eat LSD, three doctors had been working extensively with psychoactive drugs in, of all places, Weyburn, Saskatchewan.

Abram Hoffer, Duncan Blewett and Humphrey Osmond believed, and were testing the theory that schizophrenia was caused by the release of too many psychoactive chemicals naturally produced by the patient's brain. They administered the same substances to themselves endeavoring to understand the schizophrenic's world. As they looked further a field, they used mescaline, mushrooms and * once it was discovered * LSD.

On January 20, 2006, The History Channel will air "The Psychedelic Pioneers", documenting the work of these early visionaries who first opened the doors of perception. They worke! d extensively with alcoholics and by administering LSD, achieved a success rate twice that of other treatment programs.

LSD changed the professional and personal lives of all who were involved in its beginnings, but it wasn't until they began to test the drug to see what it could do for creativity that it burst out into the rest of society. Through men like Alan Ginsberg, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and Aldous Huxley, tales of the experience spread like a contact high into a new generation ready to explode. All they lacked until then was the fuel.

"Pioneers" is well researched and presented in a non-judgmental, fast paced program. It is well worth watching how LSD was credited with ending the Vietnam War and changing the world forever, and how the U.S. administration was frightened by its power and rushed to make it illegal. But it wasn't before the planet had tuned in and turned on, thanks to the efforts of three men in a s! mall Canadian prairie town.

Ayahuasca and the psilocybe mushrooms are two shamanic entheogens that have entered underground, like illegal immigrants, into Western societies in the late 20th century. Their use has spread, vine-like and mycelium-like, through the psychedelic subculture of individuals and groups interested in consciousness expansion, psychospiritual healing and growth, and the restoration of a more direct relationship with thesacred dimensions of the natural world.

Dr. Metzner will present the findings regarding these two mind assisting medicines, and how they relate to psychotherapy, shamanic journey practices and alchemical divination. He is a psychologist and Professor Emeritus at the California Institute of Integral Studies. He is also the author of The Well of Remembrance, The Unfolding Self, and Green Psychology. He has developed a training program in Alchemical Divination processes for accessing intuitive knowledge for healing and guidance.

Increasing Spiritual Intelligence: Chemical Input, Religious Output
Hosted by the Theosophical Society in America

    December 14, 2006
    Thursday at 7:30 pm
    Chicago, Illinois

  • The Theosophical Society in America's National Events Webpage

The spiritual uses of psychedelics can, under special circumstances, lead to spiritual understanding, primary religious experience, and higher levels of social responsibility. From the rites at Eleusis in ancient Greece, to soma in Vedic religions, to 20th century religious explorations, does the religious use of psychoactive drugs offer direct experience of the sacred and open doors to the spiritual aspects of human nature? Dr. Roberts claims "yes." Tom Roberts, PhD, has just retired from Northern Illinois University as a full professor in the College of Education, where he taught the course Psychedelic Mindview for 25 years. This quarter he is a visiting research professor at Johns Hopkins University, Department of Psychiatry. He edited Psychoactive Sacramentals: Essays on Entheogens and Religion and is the author of Psychedelic Horizons(2006). Bruce Sewick, MA, LCPC, is a Clinical Supervisor at a community mental health center and an adjunct professor at the College of DuPage, Triton, and Wright Community Colleges. He seeks to share a better understanding of the spiritual and therapeutic potential of entheogens.
