Resonance: A Convergence of Perspectives on Music and Spirituality
    Saturday, February 5, 2005
    Pacific School of Religion
1798 Scenic Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94709

Music is an incredibly powerful phenomenon that touches us in profound ways. For more and more people, music has transcended being simply a form of art or entertainment to become much more: a source of spirituality, of religious experience, and of connection to the divine. This approach to music points the way toward a new paradigm of the sacred for the twenty-first century, a universal spiritual language that unites rather than divides. This conference will examine music from this emerging paradigm of the sacred, exploring the connection between music and spirituality from a variety of perspectives, weaving them together into a larger whole, and providing a glimpse of a new landscape of sound and spirit.

    Presenters
Silvia Nakkach, award winning composer, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, psychologist, and author of Music and the Human Process, Music in Human Adaptation, and The Transpersonal Consciousness.
Petr Janata, Ph.D, Assistant Professor of Psychology at the Center for Mind and Brain at the University of California Davis, and leading researcher in brain science as relates to music.
Shanti Shivan, practitioner of Nada Yoga (Hindu mysticism of sound) and Indian classical vocal music in the Dhrupad tradition.
Luisah Teish, Lucumi/Yoruba priestess of Oshun, author of Jambalaya: The Natural Woman's Book of Personal Charms and Practical Rituals, Carnival of the Spirit: Seasonal Celebrations and Rites of Passage, and Jump Up: Seasonal Celebrations from the World's Deep Traditions.
Robin Sylvan, Ph.D, leading researcher on the spiritual and religious dimensions of popular music, founder and director of the Sacred Center, and author of Traces of the Spirit.

Consciousness and the Spirits of Nature
Presented by Heart of the Initiate
    Bahia, Brazil
    Feb. 23 - March 03 March 06 - 13 March 16 - 23, 2005

We welcome you to a series of one and two week experiential workshops, in an extraordinarily beautiful setting along the coast of Bahia, located approximately 700 miles north of Rio de Janeiro. During each week we will be hosting three ayahuasca journeys along with lectures on this plant medicine, it's history, and healing properties on the body. We have found that "the medicine" and the heart opening process work together synergistically, allowing us to very quickly move past our self imposed limitations. We will spend the week exploring and opening the subtle doorway through the heart energy and into the inner trans-dimentional worlds long forgotten by mankind. This is the path back to remembering your true divinity and awakening of the true self. As we work through our old, limiting patterns, we begin to heal and reclaim our lost power.

    Guest Facilitators and Staff:

Ralph Miller - Respected facilitator Ralph Miller utilizes the gifts of our Earth Mother to awaken the Truth and Proof of our real selves. His gentle, quieting stillness creates a soothing and safe environment necessary to reach the depth of our inner being. It is here that you are awakened to the true you; opening your eyes and mind to the many hidden dimensions that surround us.

Kajuyali Tsamani - Step into a tradition where the shaman will lead you to his world of the supernatural. Initiated by the legendary Kogi Indians of Northern Colombia, Kajuyali Tsamani will host an interactive ayahuasca experience with drumming, singing, dancing and movement.

We have chosen a beautiful and comfortable beach front property on the coast of Bahia, Brazil. We will have exclusive and private use for our stay and includes 10 bungalows, a restaurant, which we'll have full use of, and swimming pool. Creating it's own little village, the buildings are individually designed and constructed of local raw materials and carefully inserted into the rainforest. Some of the buildings are almost 3 meters high offering stunning views of the sea and surrounding jungle, giving the sensation of being in treehouses. A shallow and gentle Atlantic Ocean, which in its low tide reveals up to 200 meters of nearly deserted white sand beach and natural pools, meanders by, providing us a place to relax and play.

Family Members and Friends of People Incarcerated March on D.C.
    Washington, D.C.

"Two million imprisoned - too many!"

Family Members and Friends of People Incarcerated, an organization based in Montgomery, Alabama is calling for individuals and organizations to travel from their respective communities.

The United States imprisons its citizens at rates three to ten times higher than other democratic societies. Rigid sentencing laws and 'get tough' policies have made prisons crowded, dangerous and don't make us safer. The impact of continued punishment after a person's release from prison adds to despair that keeps our communities weak.

The March on August 13th and associated events will send a message to our leaders, and is an opportunity for the world to support our demands. We must stop relying on incarceration, give people an education and rehabilitate our communities. People who pay their debt to society should be able to participate in society again.

Millions of citizens can no longer vote. Laws that partially or permanently discourage good citizenship from formerly incarcerated people cannot be supported by evidence and is bad policy.

Please support the call of Family Members and Friends of People Incarcerated, marking August 13th, 2005 a historical day. We will no longer be silent victims of criminal justice policies that target the most vulnerable citizens. We are meeting in Washington, DC to make a unified demand for justice.

Toward a Science of Consciousness: Methodological and Conceptual Issues
    Copenhagen, Denmark
    August 18-20, 2005

The fourth "midway" TSC conference will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark. It will focus on the methodological and conceptual challenges that face an interdisciplinary investigation of consciousness. In recent years, scientists have made increasing use of philosophical notions such as "consciousness" or "subjectivity". In a parallel move, a number of philosophers have employed experimental results in their own theoretical enterprise. However, the precise relation between the philosophical and the scientific takes on consciousness is far from obvious. The current discussion is characterised by a complicated melange of differing methodological approaches and different philosophical traditions. If headway is to be made, a reciprocal metareflection on the current philosophical and scientific practice is required. This is the kind of headway that TSC 2005 will try to bring about.

Confirmed speakers include: Robert van Gulick, Petra Stoerig, Patrick Haggard, Evan Thompson, Shaun Gallagher, Tony Jack, Michael Antony, Tim Crane, Victor Lamme, Thomas Metzinger, Alva No, and Jean-Luc Petit.

Consciousness and the Spirits of Nature
Presented by Heart of the Initiate
    November 04-21, 2005
    Bahia, Brazil

Heart of the Initiate offers tours to Brazil where we help people make sacred inner journeys through an intensive workshop experience. Our Brazil workshops incorporate shamanic ceremonies using the ancient plant teacher, Ayahuasca.

Stuart Wilde - Well known and respected for the 17 books he's written on consciousness and spirituality, Stuart Wilde has spent the last 25 years exploring the trans-dimensional doorway and helping others to find it themselves. Those who work with him quickly realize that at heart, Stuart is an enormously loving, generous and caring teacher, whose primary mission is to help seekers recognize their own truth.

"Telling the Truth" Luncheon with MAPS
    Sunday, December 4th, 2005
    Portland, Oregon
    1pm-2pm

We've designed a short one hour program and lunch, with time for extended discussion after the luncheon for those who want to stay longer.

This is a free lunch for people to come and learn more about MAPS. Though it is a fundraiser and you will be asked to consider making a special contribution, there is no minimum gift required. As much as anything, we want people to come and learn about the important work being done by our organization.

We would be delighted if you could join us. The Telling the Truth luncheon will be on December 4th, 1-2pm at the CenterRing, located at 5339 SE Foster Rd, Portland, OR. If you are interested in coming to the event, please RSVP to Sara Haimowitz, the event coordinator, at mirandah9@hotmail.com. If you wish to bring a friend or friends with you to the event, that would be fine. Just give Sara the names of invitees and their contact information.
